We created Elementos~Español to help teachers with the workload that can come with teaching using CI (comprehensible input) methods for upper elementary. When I first started teaching in our school district I noticed that it was really hard to find a curriculum that fit my students interest and age level while using TPR/TPRS to teach through stories. Many of the resources I found had very young themes and images, which was an instant tune out for my 4th and 5th graders. I also had the challenge of being a traveling teacher that had to push into classrooms for a quick 25 minute class once or twice a week. My first year was a little disorganized to say the least. I noticed that I was going too fast, introducing too many words at a time, and was unable to stay in the target language (Spanish).

I knew I had to create most of my lessons from scratch in order to meet my young learners where they were. I was working with a limited schedule while traveling to each of my 38 classrooms. My greatest challenge when I first started teaching was finding engaging material with enough images to support students. I also had a hard time finding something that had a nice flow to it. This was especially important to me because as a traveling teacher I just don’t have the time or the resources to pull a lot of props from my cart or open various tabs on a computer. I also don’t have the ability to post word walls to support student comprehension during a lesson. I desperately needed something that could engage my students, transition seamlessly through the lesson, support all students in my classes and most importantly build upon itself while working through various themes and topics.

This curriculum was developed to help students acquire and retain language by going slow, focusing on high frequency structures and providing lots of opportunities for repetition, repetition, repetition.

You can use the lessons provided in a number of ways:

  1. Add the lesson ideas and activities to your current curriculum to mix things up a little bit.

  2. Start fresh with lesson 1 if you have recently decided to give CI and TPR a try with your upper elementary students.

  3. Begin the year with CI starting in all grade levels. Yes, you can totally begin lesson 1 with grades 1-6! This is such a game changer for lesson planning.

  4. Lessons work great for all teachers: Traveling teachers, have your own classroom teachers, on-line teachers or at home teachers.

What will you find in our lesson bundles?

Each lesson bundle builds upon itself. You can start with lesson 1 or take a look at the Elementos Scope & Sequence to determine which bundle would be a good place to start for your classes. Each individual lesson is formatted to help build routine in class while providing students with something new and interesting to keep them focused on learning Spanish.

Here is how our lessons are formatted:

  1. ¡Hola!

  2. Countdown to class: classes start with #s 1-20, in later lessons they will count 1-20 backwards, then eventually count by 10s to 100, count by 100s etc.

  3. Greeting song

  4. Daily routine: I like to start by asking basic questions to my students. This activity grows organically as we learn about greetings, feelings, calendar, weather, time and adjectives. Your daily routine will begin to have more topics as you continue through the lessons.

  5. Quick review

  6. Vocabulary introduction or key vocabulary review

  7. Use key vocabulary in context: This is often through Q&A, mini stories, acting a story, connection to a song, discussion of images, games, movie talk or clip chat.

  8. Wrap up lessons with a review activity: games, songs or student worksheets.

  9. Student work

  10. ¡Adiós!

Almost everything that we supply through our lesson plans are editable. Teachers should go through the lessons prior to teaching to make sure that any slides that should be personalized are updated (either with teacher name or other information relevant to you or your students). You can also easily increase or change the language being used for any activity.

We really hope that you and your students enjoy these resources. Check back soon for new lesson bundles or tips/tricks to use the classroom.
